Chocolate and antioxidants; a great combination

Antioxidants and Healthy Chocolate

New health research underlines activity between antioxidant and chocolate.

Evidence backing the health promoting benefits of chocolate being full of antioxidants continues to mount, bringing dynamism to slacking sales, reports Lindsey Partos. Researchers from Spain have discovered that polyphenols found in cocoa extract influence human cellular responses to oxidative stress.

In vitro (test tube) and in vivo (in humans) studies have shown that cocoa flavonoids and certain chocolates may decrease low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, may modulate platelet activation and could positively affect the balance between certain hormones, or eicosanoids. These actions can play a role in maintaining heart health.

Studies

Two significant studies on the possible health benefits of chocolate were published in 2003 in prestigious scientific journals. One study, published in Nature magazine, found that only dark chocolate was a potent antioxidant.

This study established that adding milk to chocolate or drinking milk with dark chocolate prevents the body from absorbing the antioxidants in chocolate.

The second study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that dark chocolate appeared to lower high blood pressure among middle-aged people with mild cases of hypertension Nutritional advisor quotes: (Yale New Haven hospital) “Over 300 naturally occurring chemicals are found in chocolate.

In a study conducted by Andrew Waterhouse, chocolate was found to have potent antioxidants called phenols. These antioxidants are the same types found in red wine.

Cocoa phenols were found to prevent the bad cholesterol from causing plaque buildup in the arteries.

In another study cocoa inhibited LDL oxidation two hours after consumption.

Waterhouse also found that the darker the chocolate, the more phenols it contains. Darker and finer chocolates contain 70 percent cocoa butter, which provides the stearic acid. Most commercial candy bars contain only 20 percent cocoa butter. The conclusion is the purer and darker chocolates may provide the most health benefits.” Read more about antioxidants and chocolate...
